Physical Education at Chantry: Active, Inclusive, and Inspiring

At Chantry Middle School, our PE curriculum is designed to help all pupils develop the motivation, confidence, and skills to enjoy being active throughout their lives. Through a wide range of sports and physical activities, we promote health, teamwork, and a love of movement in every student.

From Year 5 to Year 8, pupils build their physical literacy, developing agility, balance, coordination, and the ability to apply techniques in different sports. Lessons are structured to gradually build knowledge and confidence through skill-based practice, small-sided games, and reflective learning.

Our approach to assessment focuses on three key areas:

  • Practical Ability – How well pupils perform and apply skills.
  • Core Values – Teamwork, effort, resilience, and sportsmanship.
  • Knowledge – Understanding of rules, tactics, and strategies.

Feedback is mostly verbal, given either individually or in groups, with time built in for pupils to act on it and improve. We begin each topic by reviewing previous learning to help pupils make connections between sports and build long-term understanding.

Our learning environment is inclusive and encouraging. Lessons are designed so that all pupils can succeed and feel confident, regardless of ability or experience. Adaptations for all learners are made using the STEP model (Space, Task, Equipment, People), allowing every child to participate meaningfully and be appropriately challenged.

We offer a rich programme of extra-curricular sport, including free lunchtime clubs, after school specialist coaching sessions, and competitive opportunities at both school and regional levels. Pupils can take part in intra- and inter-school competitions across a wide variety of sports.

At Chantry, PE is about more than just playing games—it’s about building character, enjoying activity, and developing lifelong healthy habits in a fun, supportive, and aspirational environment.
