Global Curriculum at Chantry Middle School
At Chantry Middle School, our Global Curriculum empowers pupils to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. Rooted in the Oxfam Education for Global Citizenship framework, it is designed to foster thoughtful, compassionate, and informed individuals who recognise their ability to make a positive difference—both locally and globally.
The curriculum is built around seven key global learning themes, with pupils exploring three of these each academic year to allow for meaningful depth and reflection. These themes are integrated across the curriculum through a strong focus on knowledge and understanding, critical skills, and shared human values.
A thematic, cross-curricular approach links subject areas such as English, Geography, History, Art, Technology, and Personal Development. High-quality core texts anchor each theme, providing powerful entry points for discussion and insight. Reading is interwoven throughout all subjects, helping pupils connect ideas and deepen their understanding of global issues.
Each year group explores relevant and age-appropriate themes:
- Year 5 examines Human Rights, Social Justice and Equality, and Sustainable Development, tackling topics like migration, global poverty, and environmental responsibility.
- Year 6 focuses on Power and Governance, Peace and Conflict, and Identity and Diversity, encouraging pupils to consider rights, representation, and cultural heritage.
- Year 7 explores Race and Equal Rights, Homelessness, and Sustainability, providing insight into inequality, marginalisation, and climate action.
- Year 8 builds on this foundation with Political Systems, Peace and Conflict, and Colonial History, fostering deeper understanding of authority, resistance, and global power dynamics.
Throughout their journey, pupils are encouraged to think critically, act ethically, and participate actively in shaping a fairer, more sustainable world. Our Global Curriculum nurtures the skills and attitudes needed to become responsible global citizens—ready to engage with the challenges of today and lead positive change tomorrow.
