E-Safety Information Evening

9th January 2020Mrs C Allison

The internet and mobile phones pose a significant safeguarding risk to children and it is important that we minimise that risk by educating our pupils on how to keep themselves safe from harm. We do a lot of work in school. We know, however, from speaking with parents, that many parents feel out of their depth with some technologies and some parents do not fully understand the associated risks and what can be done to minimise this.

We are holding an e-safety evening for all parents on Wednesday 22nd January 5.00 – 6.00 pm. During the evening we will be giving a talk on E-safety, with the opportunity to ask questions and find out more.

Newminster and Chantry Summer Holiday Themed Showcase

8th January 2020Sarah Hall

Wednesday 10th June and Thursday 11th June 2020

Performances in Chantry hall starting at 6:30pm

We would like to invite pupils from Newminster and Chantry Middle Schools to be involved in a Summer Holiday Themed Showcase which will be performed in the Chantry School hall on Wednesday 10th June and Thursday 11th June 2020 at 6.30 pm.

The Showcase will be a play with added variety performances and will include the choir, vocal groups, various dance troupes, acting and some instrumentalists.

If your child would like to be involved in the singing and acting elements of this performance they will need to attend rehearsals on Monday’s, 3.30-4.30 pm in the Chantry hall which are supervised by Ms Jones, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Mole. Rehearsals will start on Monday 27th January 2020 and no experience is necessary to join this so please encourage your child to take up this opportunity.

We will hold auditions for the other acts needed for the show and more information will be given to the pupils about this in due course.

The Bronze Visual Arts Award pupils, supervised by Mrs Woolley, will design and paint the stage backdrop as part of their project.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing your child at the showcase rehearsals.

Home for Christmas

6th January 2020Sarah Hall
Chantry and Newminster choir performed the Christmas musical ‘Home for Christmas’, along with carols, to a packed church full of parents, carers, governors, staff and friends of the schools at St James Church Wednesday 18th December.
The story of ‘Home for Christmas’
It’s a manic pre-Christmas shopping day and the streets are packed with bargain hunters.  No-one notices homeless Kate falling on the pavement, apart from Nicky and Paul, who help her up. When they offer to help Kate to get home, Nicky and Paul find out that she has no home – except for a cardboard box.

Shocked, the children want to help Kate. They go and tell their mother about her, but Mum is just angry to hear that they have been talking to a homeless stranger. As Christmas draws nearer, the children can’t get Kate out of their

minds.  In the end they persuade their mum to help …

Joyeux Noël! ¡Feliz Navidad!

20th December 2019Mrs C Allison

The MFL department has had a festive month.  As you may have read back in November, we have been part of a European Christmas decoration exchange.  Our Y6 and Y8 pupils made some wonderful cards and mini trees to send to 30 different schools around Europe, and in return those schools sent us 30 different ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree in the entrance to the languages block.  For the past 3 weeks on Twitter, we revealed what the postman was delivering each day and we added them to the tree. And here it is finished! We wish all our partner schools a very Merry Christmas and want to send a huge big thank you to everyone who was involved.

“It was great to see the variety of things we have been sent and I enjoyed opening one of the parcels as it felt like a mini Christmas day!  Their gifts have been really creative.” Olivia, Y6

“Some of the schools sent us information on what their country’s traditions are over Christmas and I found it interesting reading about how their holidays and cultures compare to our own.”  Jack, Y8

“I loved watching the video a Spanish school sent us.  Their English is really impressive.” Lila, Y7

“One of the Austrian schools sent a Sauerkraut soup recipe and I am planning on making it on Christmas Eve.”  Matty, Y8

“I love the idea that so many schools have been coming together to work as one at this time of year.”  Ben, Y8

Au Revoir Madame Conway!

20th December 2019Mrs C Allison
Today, we wave ‘Au Revoir’ to Madame Conway.  She has been with us this term on a PGCE placement teaching French and assisting in Spanish lessons.  She has been a fantastic addition to the Languages team and we wish her all the best in her next school and future career.

“Alors, c’est fini! This term at Chantry has been incredibly enriching for me. I’ve loved teaching French. The energy and enthusiasm of the young people at Chantry is so refreshing. Lessons have always been fun and vibrant. The Day of European Languages was a fantastic introduction to Chantry and Igot to see what the pupils here are truly capable of.  I worked alongside Y8s to help plan a baking session who then did an excellent job of teaching a group of year 6s their cupcake recipe, entirely in French! Chantry also has an amazing choir which I got to help out with a few times. I loved the Christmas performances and I’ll be sure to listen out for you all on the radio one day! Finally, merci beaucoup à vous toutes Madame Said, Madame Brown et Madame Evans! Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année!”.

Enterprise Day

7th December 2019Mrs C Allison

Enterprise Day

Over 97% of pupils felt the day improved their ability to listen and share ideas.
Over 82% of pupils agreed that it help build their self confidence.
Over 97% of pupils agree that it allowed them the ability to work as a team.

Chantry took part in our annual Enterprise Day on Thursday 5th December facilitated by Carole Richards, Northumberland Education Business Partnership, part of Northumberland County Council.

The theme of the day was ‘Build a Business’ and with the help of over 30 local Business Ambassadors the pupils worked in small groups to plan, design and develop a business. The groups of pupils, who were all mixed, from Year 5 to Year 8 then had to present their business ideas to the rest of their class group for the chance to win the grand prize… a Terry’s Chocolate Orange!

The day was a huge success and all pupils were thoroughly engaged in the learning that was taking place. Cooperation, teamwork, resilience, creativity and achievement were all core skills that the pupils developed further throughout the day as they all worked collaboratively to ensure the end goal was met.

Pupils who took part in the event commented:

‘I really enjoyed the day and liked working with different types of people.’

‘It was good fun as we were learning but in a different way.’

‘I think my idea will sell for millions…will Alan Sugar be interested?’
