Un Voyage Magique

7th October 2019Mrs C Allison

Thursday 26th September was European Day of Languages and every year we enter a national competition run by Association for Language Learning,  This year’s theme was ‘A Magical Trip’ and pupils had to produce a short piece of writing using a language other than English.  Some of our Y6 pupils created some amazing compositions in French for their ‘Voyage Magique’.

“I went to see Les MisĂ©rables at the theatre this month and that inspired me to plan a trip based on the French Revolution.”  Ollie, 6S

“I wrote about a trip I had already been on as I have some great memories from it.  I also added some photos from my actual holiday.” Ava, 6I

“My trip is all about going to Disneyland as it is definitely a place of magic!”  Eva, 6L

Good luck to all our entrants and we will let you know of any Chantry competition winners.

Year 6 Visit to St Mary’s Lighthouse

4th October 2019Mrs C Allison
Year 6 students have just taken part in the annual field trip to St Mary’s Lighthouse as part of their current Science work on habitats, feeding relationships and adaptation.
During their visits the students learnt about the local geology, undertook a rock pool study and climbed the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse tower. The children particularly enjoyed learning about how the various rock pool creatures are adapted to live in such a challenging environment.
A big thank you to the parents and carers who gave up their valuable time to come and help with the visits.
Thanks also to St Mary’s Lighthouse wardens Adam, Sam and Pip for their knowledge, expertise and making us feel so welcome.

Clowning Around – Year 5

1st October 2019Mrs C Allison

On Monday 30th September and Tuesday 1st October, Year 5 pupils had the opportunity to take part in a ‘ready for work’ skills workshop called Clowning Around, facilitated by Carole Richards, Northumberland Education Business Partnership, part of Northumberland County Council.

The objective of the morning to work in small teams to design, create and sell a Clown Mobile, the type above a babies cot. The event helped the pupils to understand various aspects of how businesses run and explore different job roles. Some of the other key skills developed were teamwork, communication and resilience.

On fait la cuisine

30th September 2019Mrs C Allison

Following a successful bid by our MFL ambassadors, Y8 delivered a French cooking class for some of our KS2 pupils.  Demonstrations were given using only the target language and some delightful cupcakes with a continental twist were cooked up.

“I learnt the name of a lot of new ingredients and as we have been doing about pets in French class, I decorated one of my cakes with ‘un chien’.”  Lewis, 6L

“When we did the decorating, we had to ask for the icing colours in French.  Bleu, blanc and rouge were used by everybody.” Caleb, 6M

“The Y8 chefs were not allowed to speak any English and I did my best to only speak French too.  I enjoyed telling off the chefs if they weren’t using ‘français’.” Theo, 6I

“It was a great event and a chance for us to use our language skills in a new context.  Although we had a few technical hitches like eggs being dropped and losing the cup cake cases, I was glad to get the chance to be involved in something a bit different.” Ben, 8J

“There was definitely a lot of hard work and dedication involved, writing and learning the recipe, but everyone had a great day.”  Jack, 8M

Thanks to our Year 8s for leading the event and to Europe Direct Durham for the funding.  More events to celebrate languages, both European and farther afield, will be taking place this week so keep posted for more details.

Congratulations to our Geography Department

27th September 2019Mrs C Allison

We are delighted to announce that the Geographical Association (GA) has awarded Chantry Middle School’s Geography Department with both the Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) and silver for the Primary Geography Quality Mark (PGQM). The award process encourages and supports schools to reflect on their work and strive for the highest quality in their teaching. All the award winners undergo a rigorous moderation process, and the team of assessors were highly impressed by the manner in which we are all continuing to embrace new and innovative approaches to teaching Geography here at Chantry. Both awards recognise student attainment, progress and achievement in areas such as geographical knowledge, understanding, values, skills and concepts, and sets expectations about the quality of teaching in geography. It aims to promote effective subject leadership and management, helping to raise the standard of Geography in a school. We would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff and students involved with this process.
