Music at Chantry: Creative, Confident, and Expressive

At Chantry, our music curriculum is designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and inspire a lifelong love of music. All pupils have the opportunity to perform, compose, listen to, and evaluate music from a wide range of cultures and styles, helping them become confident, expressive musicians.

From Year 5, pupils develop their musical skills through singing, playing instruments, and using technology. Lessons explore key concepts such as rhythm, melody, pitch, and structure. As pupils progress through the school, they build on this knowledge, moving from simple melodies to more complex compositions and performance work, including music from around the world and film soundtracks.

Music lessons are practical and inclusive. Teachers give clear success criteria and model tasks in small steps to help all learners succeed. Pupils are regularly encouraged to perform, reflect, and improve their work through verbal feedback, peer and self-assessment. Teachers check understanding using hands-up techniques, whiteboards, and targeted questioning. When pupils are ready, performances are recorded to support accurate assessment and celebrate progress.

We place a strong emphasis on creativity and personal growth. Pupils are encouraged to experiment and express themselves through music, whether independently or in small groups. SEND learners are supported through visual aids, simplified tasks, small group support, and frequent check-ins to ensure every pupil can participate fully.

Music is brought to life through rich enrichment opportunities. Pupils can take part in choirs, bands, Rock Steady performances, and clubs such as Ukulele and Jazz Band. Instrumental lessons are available for a wide range of instruments, and there are opportunities to perform in school shows, singathons, and public showcases.

At Chantry, music is more than a subject—it’s a chance for every child to find their voice, grow in confidence, and be part of something creative and joyful.
