PSHCE at Chantry: Preparing Pupils for Life

At Chantry Middle School, our PSHCE curriculum is designed to help pupils grow into confident, kind, and informed individuals. Our aim is to develop their understanding of the world, relationships, health, and their role as citizens in local, national, and global communities.

Pupils learn how to:

  • Maintain healthy, respectful relationships and friendships

  • Understand and uphold British Values

  • Keep themselves safe and healthy—physically, mentally, and online

  • Develop financial awareness and future aspirations

  • Reflect on global issues such as discrimination, democracy, extremism, and environmental responsibility

The PSHCE curriculum is structured around big questions that guide learning. Lessons include clear learning intentions, vocabulary teaching, group work, discussion tasks, and opportunities for reflection. Pupils complete activities in varied formats, such as posters, post-it notes, class displays, and collaborative work, all of which contribute to a class book showcasing their learning.

Assessment happens regularly through questioning, discussions, and practical activities. Teachers use questioning and class feedback to identify and address misconceptions. There is a strong emphasis on building knowledge step by step, using retrieval practice to help pupils connect and remember key ideas.

From Year 5 to Year 8, the content develops in complexity. Pupils explore relationships, health and wellbeing, politics, money, identity, the law, and life skills. Topics such as democracy, media influence, mental health, consent, contraception, and online safety are introduced in age-appropriate ways, helping students navigate the real world with understanding and confidence.

SEND pupils are supported with clear timeframes, scaffolded tasks, and live feedback. PSHCE lessons are inclusive, encouraging all pupils to share their ideas and learn from others.

Through PSHCE, we aim to give our pupils the tools to live safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives—now and in the future.
